The museum and grounds that used to be called Indianapolis Museum of Art is now called Newfields. This is a great place to spend a day any time of year, but especially when weather is nice for being outside.
There is a main building, the Indianapolis Museum of Art, which contains a nice art museum. It contains many different exhibit areas with art pieces. Many eras, artists, and mediums are represented. There are areas dedicated to American art, European art, Asian art, Decorative art, Native American art, and African art. There are rotating exhibits that showcase other art styles and pieces. The Star Studio has hands on activities for kids. There are other, smaller hands on areas located throughout the museum as well. Family backpacks are also available.
The museum also contains a very nice café and an interesting gift shop. On the main floor there are also some classroom like spaces that often have free art projects set up for guests to make and take their own art.
The upper floor of the museum is now the Lume. This is an interactive exhibit that immerses you into the art of an artist. As of early 2023 Monet & Friends is the feature of this area. The pictures below are from 2022 when Vincent Van Gogh was the artist whose work was used in the Lume.
Newfields encompasses 152 acres of outdoor space. There are beautiful gardens to explore. The trails surround a lake and wander through the woods and gardens. Many outdoor sculptures can be found throughout the grounds, and some can be touched and climbed on.
There are a few special events offered throughout the year. In the spring, the flowers are amazing. In the fall, they host an evening Halloween type event. At Christmas time the gardens are transformed by amazing lights, decorations, and music. We have done the Christmas event, called Winterlights, and it is amazing.
The Lily House is a beautifully restored mansion on the grounds. It can be toured sometimes. During the Winterlights events, the Lily House is decorated beautifully for the holidays. A restroom and a water fountain are available in the Lily House for use when exploring the gardens. There is often a hands-on building or crafting station set up in the lower level.
In my experience, Newfields is enjoyed by people of all ages and all levels of art knowledge. Of course the art inside the Museum cannot be touched. When visiting with young kids you will need to be able to keep them from touching things or getting too close. Even little ones can enjoy looking though. All ages of kids will enjoy the hands on activities inside. The gardens outside are wonderful to visit with all ages. There is so much to see and such beautiful places to roam.
