Trip Notes

Savannah, GA

We made a quick visit to Savannah, Georgia in May of 2022.

What we did

We started off our morning by visiting Forsyth Park. It was beautiful and so peaceful.  We enjoyed a walk through the local trees, moss, and flowers.  We took pictures by the fountain and checked out a couple of playgrounds. The surrounding area features beautiful, historic homes.

After the park, we explored Savannah City Market. Our favorite store was Rhen’s Nest Toy Shop. So many great toys! We wished we were there more for shopping than just looking. Another notable stop in the market area for us was Byrd’s Famous Cookies.  They have many different types of cookies and they offer free samples. There were even a couple of gluten free cookie options available to purchase or sample. We all enjoyed the cookies we tried, including the gluten free one for our gluten free teen.

Where we ate

Lunch time was approaching and we were all hungry.  There were many restaurants in this area.  We checked a couple menus and asked in one restaurant about gluten free options, but we weren’t finding anything that was going to work for us. A little internet research led us to Goose Feathers Cafe.  It was within walking distance and had gluten free choices as well as positive reviews.  After the short walk there we discovered they were closed the day of our visit due to a plumbing problem, so we didn’t get to try it.  By this time it had started to rain, and we didn’t have rain gear with us.  We ducked under balconies and moved quickly back to our vehicle before resuming our internet search for a good lunch option.

We headed to the Crystal Beer Parlor for lunch. It was a short drive away from the Savannah City Market. There was plenty of on street parking available. They did offer a gluten free menu and had some choices that worked for my daughter. The rest of us found options that worked for us as well. The restaurant has a large outdoor seating area. The inside has old pictures and local history on the walls. We enjoyed our visit and would recommend it to visitors to the area.

Where we stayed

We stayed the night before our visit at the Baymont by Wyndam Savannah / Garden City.  The Baymont was not fancy, but it was the most affordable night of lodging on our 12 night journey. It was clean enough and the beds were super comfy. There was an outdoor pool, but we didn’t have time to check it out.  We were hoping to use the fitness center, but it was unavailable.  The front desk staff said we could use a fitness facility in the building next door during the daytime, but we didn’t try it during our very short visit. There was a very limited free breakfast available. For the value price, we would stay again.  It was perfect for our quick one night stay with a late night arrival after a long day of driving. I would not recommend it for a long stay or a trip where you plan to spend time relaxing at the hotel.
